Glowing IWN Hearts shine at 2010 Winter Olympics and
Paralympics! For many in BC, the 2010 Winter
Olympics, including the Paralympic Games, are a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity
to witness, close-up, the tangible expression of the Olympic values of
friendship, excellence and respect. From the spectacular vista of the opening
ceremonies with the four ‘welcome totem poles’, to the people of all ages and
backgrounds across Canada running with the Olympic torch, it’s pretty impossible
not to be moved by these events. And members of the IWN have played their part.
Pam Glass, from the IWN Executive and former IWN Woman of the Year carried the
torch in Surrey while holding a picture of her beloved daughter Kelli, who died
at Christmas last year. Ann Carr, another former IWN Woman of the Year award
winner, will carry the torch in the forthcoming Paralympics, as will IWN member
Mary McCormack. The IWN salutes these women and is delighted that their role and
work in the community is recognized through participation in this special way at
these Olympics.
Cultural displays at the Irish House
The Irish Heritage Society and the IWN contributed materials to an Irish
cultural display in the Irish house in downtown Vancouver. Teresa and George
McDonnell have put an incredible amount of time and care into ensuring a
permanent presence from the Irish community in the Irish house. Many of the
Irish organizations were represented at the opening of the Irish house. Pam
Glass from the IWN, in full Olympic regalia and with the Olympic torch she ran
with, spoke eloquently at the opening on the significance of the occasion. She
and the torch were a highlight of the evening, attracting queues of people who
waited to get a photograph with her throughout the evening, which Pam moved
through with generosity, grace and ease.
IWN Anniversary Lunch – Save the Date
Our next event will be the annual IWN Anniversary Lunch on Sunday April 25th.
Details on the venue will be announced shortly by email to members and in the
next Celtic Connection. And for those who have already dusted off your green
feather boas and have started the search for the stylish, green high-heels in
anticipation of this year’s St. Patrick’s Day parade - ease the pedal! The 2010
parade has been cancelled because of the Olympics. That gives us a whole year to
find those elusive green high-heels in time for March 2011!
